Cheap Sources for Food Storage

By Christina at http://www.northerncheapskate.com

September 29th, 2009

After I wrote about the lessons learned from my pantry reorganization, one reader asked me how to find cheap sources for airtight food storage.

I don’t think I’ve ever paid more than a buck for a food storage container.

Repurpose a container you already have. You may be able to reuse an old peanut butter jar or other glass jars or containers. Just be sure that the container is food-safe, meaning that it is safe to store food in. Don’t go storing your beans in an old kitty litter tub, or there may be trouble later! Also, be sure to properly label the new container so that there is no confusing what is in it. This is smart, not only so that you know what you have, but for safety reasons – especially if you have someone with a food allergy digging around in your pantry.

Ask your family and friends if they have any containers. Some folks accumulate Tupperware and Rubbermaid in the back of their cupboards and forget about it. Ask them if they have any they could spare. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Try Freecycle. Freecycle is a great place to find things you need without spending a dime. Put out a request in your local area and see what happens.

Garage sales and thrift stores. You can usually find some food storage containers here for less than a buck.

Estate sales. I love estate sales – a whole household full of stuff to buy! Sometimes you can find entire matching canister sets for just a few dollars.

Try eBay. You may be able to find a great deal on food storage on eBay. Just make sure you watch out for outrageous shipping and handling fees or the deal won’t be worth the effort!

What are some ways you save on food storage containers? Please share your ideas!

A Cheaper Sweeper (Works For Me Wednesday)

By Melissa at http://www.frugalcreativity.com/

September 17th, 2009

This is a two-part tip:

Several years ago, when I purchased a Swiffer-type mop, I also purchased a few flannel cloths to use instead of disposable ones. They work well for cleaning up dust and hair, but not so well on crumbs. So we use those for sweeping the bathroom floors, but not in the kitchen. They’ve been through the wash many times and still work like new.

For the kitchen floor, I’ve been using disposable cloths. They work great! However, this doesn’t seem like the most frugal option. Quite by accident, I discovered something. Out of habit, I scooped up the used disposable cloth with the laundry. I noticed it when I took it out of the washer, and I hung it up to air-dry. It’s fluffier than it started, but it’s still textured and it works. I don’t think I’d wash it a second time, because it might just disintegrate all over the other laundry. But it is, at least, a way to double the value of these disposable cloths.
